PURPOSE: A shift mode control method of an automatic transmission is provided to improve a driver's travel feeling and to secure the improvement of the fuel consumption ratio, by sensing acceleration of an economy mode state by a TCU(Transmission Control Unit) and applying a shift pattern mode desired by a driver. CONSTITUTION: A shift mode control method of an automatic transmission comprises a first step of determining the current travel mode; a second step of applying a mode selected by a driver if the travel mode is not an economy mode, and retrieving an economy travel mode application condition if the travel mode is the economy mode; a third step of applying the mode selected by the driver if the retrieved result doesn't satisfy the economy travel mode application condition, and reading a throttle valve value and comparing the current valve value with a predetermined reference value if the retrieved result satisfies the economy travel mode application condition; a fourth step of applying the mode selected by the driver if the throttle valve value is less than a predetermined reference value, and comparing a throttle valve variation value for predetermined time with a predetermined reference value if the throttle valve value is more than a predetermined reference value; and a fifth step of applying the mode selected by the driver if the throttle valve value is less than the predetermined reference value, and applying a power mode if the throttle valve value is more than the predetermined reference value.
