1,201,954. Air-cells. YARDNEY INTER, NATIONAL CORP. 25 Oct., 1967 [25 Oct.- 1966], No. 48551/67. Heading H1B. An electric cell comprising a positive oxygen electrode 1, situated in or forming part of a housing containing a negative electrode 2, an auxiliary electrode 3 of a metal more electropositive than the active material of the negative electrode an an alkaline electrolyte is provided with circuitry by which the negative electrode can be charged against the auxiliary electrode independently of the positive electrode and discharged against the positive electrode alone or together with the auxiliary electrode. The positive electrode may be porous and contain C, Ag, Pt or Pd as catalyst, e.g. a nickel mesh coated with PTFE and catalyst. The negative electrode may be of Zn, Cd, Sn or Fe. In Fig. 1 it is rotatable about shaft 4. The auxiliary electrode may be a perforated Ni plaque impregnated with nickel oxide. It may have a smaller capacity than the negative electrode. The electrolyte may be aqueous KOH. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the negative electrode is fitted with wiper elements (16 and 16<SP>1</SP>). In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the negative electrode is stationary and separators of regenerated cellulose or PVA are present. |
