An electricity generator comprises (i) a rigid cylinder 4; (ii) a sealed flexible envelope 2 which is wrapped around the curved surface of the cylinder and contains a pair of electrodes each with a lead protruding outside the envelope, a separator and an electrolyte; and (iii) a body surrounding the envelope and urging it against the cylinder. The electrodes may be rechargeable and comprise fabric or sintered metal supports impregnated with nickel or cadmium compounds as active material. The electrolyte may be alkaline. The envelope may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, P.V.C., a polyamide or polyethylene terephthalate. The leads may run along opposite edges of the envelope protruding on opposite sides of the assembly (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). The envelope may be reinforced where the leads pass through it. The cylinder may be made from foamed plastics material, e.g. polyethylene, polystyrene, or polyurethane. It may be circular in cross-section and have a flange, 16, at each end. It may have a recess, 10, at one end and a corresponding protuberance, 9, at the other to interlock with other assemblies to form a battery. The surrounding body (iii) may be a second cylinder, Fig. 1, or a strip of flexible material, Fig. 6. The second cylinder may be moulded around the first. The strip of flexible material may be adhesive, glass fabric or a ring of plastics material. The generator may include solar cells to recharge it and to power a printed circuit heating element around the envelope. It may be used to power high-altitude weather sounding balloons. |
