The screw driver has a holder (1) with sleeve (11) and polygonal opening for inserting an operating shaft (3) which can be selectively fixed by a closing device having a locking mechanism fixed in the holder and provided with opening coaxial with polygonal opening in holder. A slide device extends through the locking mechanism and is held partially in the opening therein and can move relative to the locking device. The slide device has a polygonal opening so that the operating shaft can extend through the slide device. Numerous steel balls inside the slide device each selectively abut against an inner periphery of the tapering section of the opening in the locking device and against the outer periphery of the operating shaft so that the latter is selectively fixed. An elastic element around the slide device provides a resetting force. A control device attached on the holder connects with the closing device so that the slide device can be moved forwards and causes the steel balls to be released from the operating shaft.
