<p>Method and apparatus for characterizing the shape of an isomeric form of a sample where a MALDI source (12) produces a beam of particles which are optically excited to a first Rydberg state (1) thent to a second Rydberg state (2) before ionizing the sample and correlating the energy levels to optical wavelengths to produce and analyze molecular shape.</p>
