1278191 Eddy current brakes and clutches M BAERMANN 23 Jan 1970 [24 Jan 1969] 3304/70 Heading H2A In an eddy current clutch or, as shown, a vehicle brake comprising a magnetic field producing inductor 2 and an electrically conductive coated ferromagnetic eddy current conductor 7 which are separated by an air gap 8 and are mutually relatively movable, the inductor comprises a plurality of permanent magnets 13 associated with pole shoes 10 arranged in a ring shape, and a field winding 14 either on each shoe or (Fig. 3) between pairs of shoes for producing an electromagnetic field, the arrangement being such that adjacent shoes have opposite polarity N, S and the permanent magnet field produced therein can be intensified or weakened by the electromagnetic field. This allows switching on and off of the brake yet provides some braking effect should the winding supply fail, and the windings may be DC. supplied via rectifiers from an A.C. generator whose rotor rotates therewith. The inductor 2 and fan blades 4 are fastened to the shaft 1 to be braked, whilst the conductor 7 has cooling ribs 9 and is attached to casing 5 fastened to, e.g., a vehicle frame. The conductor 7 alternatively may have, Figs. 4 and 5, a H.P. liquid cooling system; moreover, it may be rotatable and arranged on one or both lateral sides of a stationary inductor. |
