The method involves determining a parameter from the frequency of the hub dynamo (1) and operating the functional unit depending on the value of the parameter. The parameter determined is the deceleration of the bicycle and the functional unit that is operated is an illumination device with a front headlamp (2), a rear light (3) and a hub dynamo and two operating modes. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a circuit for deceleration-induced operation of a lighting device.
