A fastening device comprising a fastening member 38 of generally channel-shaped section, said member having a fastening element 54 at one end, two pivot pins 24, 44 carried by a link 28, one of said pins 22 pivotally supporting said link on a bracket 18, the other 44 of said pins pivotally connecting said fastening member to said link, said link being provided with an elongate slot 36 for receiving one of said pins 44 for limited movement along the length of the slot 36, a compression spring 56 located between said pins to urge the pin 44 to one limit of its movement with respect to said link, said fastening member being movable from an open position in which said bracket and said link are exposed to a closed position in which said fastening member houses said link and said bracket to conceal the same and auxiliary means for releasably holding said fastening member in its closed position. In the construction shown the element 54 is in the form of a nose for engaging a strike 60 when the bracket 18 is secured to one member 12 and the strike 60 is secured to another member 14 to be fastened together by the device. The provision of the pin and slot connection between the link and the member 28 allows for differences in the relative positions of the bracket and strike on the two members, the spring 56 moving the pin 44 to the appropriate position in the slot 36 to take up the differences in position. The member 38 also serves as a handle and it has sides which receive the pin 44. The link is hollow and contains from said spring 56 which are trapped between the pin 44 and the pin 24 by which the link is secured to the bracket. In the fastening position the disposition of the pivot pin 24 is such that it is to one side of a line joining the pivot pin 44 to the nose 54 so that the pin 24 is to one side of a dead centre. Moving the member 38 upwardly about the nose 54 as a fulcrum moves the pivot pin to the other side of the line joining the nose to the pin 44 and the nose can then be released from the strike 60. A pair of leaf springs 64 are connected to the bracket and bear on the underside of the link so that the link tends to be held in the position shown with the member 38 either in the position shown in full lines or the releasing position shown in broken lines. In a modification the leaf springs instead of being connected to the bracket are carried by the member 38 and bear on the opposite side of the link with the same result. In a further modification the pivot pin connecting the link to the bracket has a square shank portion against which the springs 56 bear and the leaf springs are omitted; the action of the springs 56 on the square shank portion has the same result as the springs 64. The pin is fixed in the sides of the bracket in this construction. In a further modification a T bolt is disposed in the link and its head bears on the pin 44; the threaded shank of the T bolt carries a knurled nut and portions of this protrude through slots in the link so that the nut can be rotated to vary the position of the head. The T bolt controls the extent of motion of the pin 44 in the slot 36. (For Figure see next page) |
