An injection molding tool has a space (8) for producing a backing on a flexible surface material (9), which has been initially been placed in the tool and clamped between slides (11, 12). The separating slide (12) includes a cavity (24) that connects with the space (8) and is of roughly the same width. The slide (12) also has a cutting edge (23) that operates with an edge (23a) on the other slide (11). An Independent claim is also included for the process that includes injecting the backing material and withdrawing the slide (12) before the backing material has fully hardened. The surface material (9) is cut between the edges (23, 23a) and the backing material in the cavity (24) forms an edge seal.
