A laser beam (LB) is directed onto an area on moving material to generate coding, which is evaluated through automatic triggering by a subordinate image-processing unit. The LB generates an octal code that represents LOW and HIGH bits at a transistor transistor logic level in an adjustable LOW-to-HIGH scan ratio and separates bytes through a doubled length of a bit at the LOW level.
