Heat exchanger for transferring heat from a hot gas stream to a fluid comprises several fluid flow channels (26) connected to a common inlet (24) and a common outlet (32). The fluid flow channels form groups of looped or curved bands (34). The axis of curvature (36, 38) of each bend (42) runs perpendicular to the hot gas stream. The fluid flows from the inlet to the outlet through the channels alternately with a flow component in the direction of the hot gas stream and in the opposite direction.
