Perception of wallpaper in an instant messaging communications session may be enabled by rendering, on an instant message (IM) recipient system (305) an instant messaging application user interface (600), (700) and (800) for an instant messaging communications session involving at least one IM recipient (305) and an instant message IM sender (105), receiving a message that includes a text message and wallpaper to be displayed by the IM recipient (305) when perceiving the text message, the wallpaper being selected by the IM sender system (105), and rendering the wallpaper at the IM recipient system (305) when rendering another portion of the message.
