Modified epoxy resins derived from polyglycidyl ethers and aromatic hydroxy-carboxylic acids. Modified epoxy resins of formula (I), in which n = 1-5; R = a biphenyl, bis-phenyl or naphthyl residue, or a residue derived from a novolak-, bisphenol-novolak- or cresol-novolak-polyglycidyl ether, an alkyl-diglycidyl ether, tetrakis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-ethane tetraglycidyl ether, triglycidyl-p-aminophenol, diglycidyl hexahydrophthalate ester, 3,4-epoxy-cyclohexane-carboxylate or N,N,N',N'-tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane from which 2 or more glycidyl ether groups have been removed; R1 = a phenylene group; R', R = H or hydroxyl . An Independent claim is also included for a method for the production of (I) by reacting epoxide compounds containing at least two epoxide groups with aromatic hydroxy-carboxylic acids, using a mol ratio of (epoxide groups):(total carboxy and hydroxy groups) = (2:1)-(6:5).
