The invention relates to live strains of Bordetella made deficient in the production of B. pertussis toxin (PTX) and, if necessary, dermonecrotic toxin (DNT) and in the release of tracheal cytotoxin (TCT) by means of genetic attenuation and, in particular, by mutation or deletion of the ptx gene and, if necessary, the dnt gene, and by insertion of a strong promoter upstream of the gene coding for the AmpG protein, said protein being involved in TCT toxin recycling. The invention also relates to methods of producing said strains and to the use thereof for the preparation of vaccines. Finally, the invention relates to immunogenic compositions containing such strains.
