1,129,463. Dimerization. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 29 Dec., 1966 [7 Jan., 1966], No. 813/66. Heading C5E. An alpha olefin is dimerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising the reaction product of a reducible salt of a Group VIII metal and a reducing agent and in the presence of a methylene halide at a temperature of-40‹ to + 200‹ C under such conditions of pressure that the reactants are maintained in the liquid or partially condensed phase, to give a product consisting predominantly of branched chain dimers having internal unsaturation and also containing linear dimers. The reducible salt may be cobalt chloride or nickel chloride, and the reducing agent may be a Grignard reagent, a metal alkyl or another organometallic compound, e.g. Et 2 AlCl or Et 3 Al. The molar ratio of the salt to the reducing agent may be in the range 2 : 1 to 1 : 10 and they are preferably heated to 40- 180‹ C. in the presence of methylene chloride before being contacted with the olefin to be dimerized. The catalyst may be supported on activated carbon. Ethylene, propylene or butene-1 may be dimerized under a pressure of 200-2000 p.s.i.g. and the dimerization of 3 methylpentene-1 or 4 methylpentene-1 may be effected at atmospheric pressure. |
