The can end forming method requires a workpiece (W) to be blanked from a sheet of material. The workpiece is then held between a blank punch (120) in the punch assembly, and a base-mounted draw pad (128). A peripheral portion of the workpiece is worked between the assembly and a crown ring (130) to contour a crown structure on the workpiece. Once the crown structure is complete, a bead punch (112) carried by the punch assembly is advanced to form a shell that extends from the crown, to a central portion of the workpiece. The bead punch is controlled so that at least one bead is formed on the shell. The shell is then extended to the specifications of the length of the can. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for forming a can end from a sheet of material.
