Calender and method of calendering

A paper-making calander (1) has a shoe drum (2) with a mantle which is pressed towards a counter-drum (3) without touching by a press shoe (8).The shoe (8) esp. has a supporting surface whose width is variable in one direction parallel to the press drum (3) axis (10). The press drum (3) is heated. The supporting surface width varies in proportion to the width of the web which runs through a broad nip between the mantle and press drum. The supporting surface has a position-limiting transverse rod moving between two seals parallel to the press drum axis (10).
