A vent hood assembly 14 comprises a horizontally extendable vent hood 18 mounted on an extending vertical or angled column 16 over a cooking surface 12. The column may be positioned at any height between it's extremes, the vent hood 18 being positionable anywhere between extended and retracted positions. When retracted, the vent hood is preferably positioned behind a cooking surface. Scissor members (56, fig 9) may be provided in a frame for extending and retracting the hood 18. Actuators (44, fig 8), (30, fig 4) for moving the hood 18 horizontally and vertically may be provided. A first actuator 44 may be mounted in the column and linked to the vent hood 18 so as to translate vertical motion of the actuator 44 into horizontal motion of the hood 18. The angle between the cooking surface and column is preferably 15{ from the vertical. A duct 70 may extend through the column to the hood 18. The hood 18 may be at least partially recessed 20 into the cooking surface 12 when lowered. The cooking surface 12 is preferably mounted in a kitchen island 10. |
