FIELD: polymer production. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to composition and for preparing nonionic and anionic water-soluble polymers in the form of fine polymer particles in aqueous salt solution. Polymers are useful as flocculants and retention and dehydration additive in manufacture of paper and other applications. Aqueous dispersion of water-soluble polymer contains: (i) 5-50 wt % anionic and/or nonionic water-soluble polymer prepared under free radical polymerization conditions at pH 2-5 using as starting materials 0-100 mol % at least one anionic water-soluble vinyl monomer and 100-0 mol % at least one nonionic vinyl monomer; (ii) 0.1-5 wt % stabilizer, in particular anionic water-soluble polymer with intrinsic viscosity about 0.1-10 dl/g in 1 M sodium nitrate; (iii) about 5-40 wt % water-soluble salt selected from ammonium, alkali and alkali-earth metal halides, sulfates, and phosphates. Dispersion has Brookfield viscosity about 10 to 25000 cps at 25 C.
