PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a new picture while keeping the image of an input picture by changing a peripheral picture element range in accordance with the magnitude of a selected feature quantity of an interest picture element. SOLUTION: Picture data inputted from a scanner 8 or the like is stored in a memory 3 for input picture. A smoothing processing to be executed is selected by a selection input key 5. The classification of the feature quantity and a distance function are determined by the type of the selected smoothing processing. The processing is branched in accordance with the determined feature quantity. For example, if the feature quantities are luminosity, variance of luminosity, edge strength, and color difference, respective smoothing processing are performed. The picture whose smoothing processings are terminated is stored in a picture memory 4 for output in the state of processing completion. Thus, arbitrary feature quantiries are selected from plural kinds of feature quantities obtained from picture element data of the interesting picture element or picture element data of picture elements around the interesting picture element, and the range of peripheral picture elements is changed in accordance with the magnitudes of selected feature quantities of the interesting picture element. |
