A method of controlling an engine (20) is provided. At least one operating parameter of the engine (20) is sensed. The engine (20) is operated in a first mode in response to the sensed operating parameter being at one of a predetermined first set of conditions. In the first mode, a cam assembly (52) moves an intake valve (32) from a first position when a piston (24) starts an intake stroke (106) and the cam assembly (52) returns the intake valve (32) to the first position when the piston (24) completes the intake stroke (106). The engine (20) is operated in a second mode in response to the sensed operating parameter being at one of a predetermined second set of conditions. In the second mode, the cam assembly (52) moves the intake valve (32) from the first position when the piston (24) starts an intake stroke (106) and an actuator (70) prevents the intake valve (32) from returning to the first position in response to the cam assembly (52).
