The invention provides compounds having, as in the Specification 1,117,592, the average formula but with extended values for x and y and the ratio y: x, viz. (1) x is between 10 and 100, y between 100 and 1000 and y: x is less than 50, and (2) x is from 1 to 10, y from 10 to 100, and y:x lies between 10 and 50; of the remaining symbols in the formula R is a monovalent C 1-18 hydrocarbon group, R<SP>1</SP> is a divalent C 1-18 hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon ether group, R<SP>11</SP> is H or as R above, X is a halogen atom and a is 0 or 1. They are prepared by reaction of appropriate compounds with an unsaturated monoepoxy compound, then with a secondary amine, and optionally with HX or R<SP>11</SP>X, when a is to be 1. In examples polysiloxanes containing methyl glycidoxypropyl siloxane and dimethylsiloxane units and trimethylsilyl end groups are reacted first with dimethylamine and then with methyl chloride; the products have x and y as in (1) above, and are surfactants or hydrophobing agents. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 804,097.
