1,200,537. Diolefin polymerization. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 26 Nov., 1968 [29 Dee., 1967], No. 55973/68. Heading C3P. Conjugated diolefins are solution polymerized using a catalyst comprising (1) an alkyl aluminium or alkyl aluminium hydride, (2) a metal organic compound, the metal being a member of Group IIIs of the Periodic System, and (3) an organoaluminium fluoride. The atomic ratio of fluorine to Group IIIB metal in the metal organic compound is in the range 15: 1 to 80: 1. Catalyst component (2) is suitably cerium octanoate. In the examples isoprene or butadiene are polymerized in organic solvent to polymers of a high cis 1,4 content using catalysts comprising (a) cerium octanoate, (b) diethylaluminium fluoride and (c) triisobutyl aluminium, diisobutylaluminium hydride, tri-n-hexylaluminium, tri-isohexylaluminium or tri-n-butylaluminium. The polymerizations were deactivated by the addition of a suitable stopping agent and an antioxidant.
