Effervescent pharmaceutical compositions contain a pharmacologically active (particularly an analgesic and antipyretic) acyl-amino phenol, an effervescent agent and a non-toxic polyvalent metal salt of stearic acid comprising 0.001 to 0.2% 'by weight of the total composition. Al, Ca and Mg stearates are preferred, particularly magnesium distearate and aluminium mono-, di- and/or tristearate. The phenol may be N-acetyl-p-amino-phenol or an ether (e.g. p-ethoxyacetanilide) or an ester (e.g. with salicylic or acetyl salicylic acids) derivative thereof. The effervescent nature of the composition is achieved by incorporation therein of an alkali metal (e.g. Na or K) carbonate and/or bicarbonate and a polycarboxylic aliphatic acid, e.g. citric or tartaric acid. The composition may also contain sorbitol, codeine, caffeine, lauryl sulphate, a sweetening and/or flavouring agent e.g. saccharin or glutamic acid. The compositions may be in the form of tablets or granular powders. |
