A method for obtaining a water-soluble microparticle with a non-zero net-ionic charge, comprising: combining a first solution, said first solution comprising a poorly-water-soluble organic substance dissolved in a suitable water-miscible organic solvent, with a second solution, said second solution comprising a polyelectrolyte dissolved in a suitable aqueous solution, wherein said organic substance comprises ionizable groups capable of imparting a net ionic charge, wherein said polyelectrolyte comprises an ionic charge opposite to the net ionic charge in the organic substance, to form said water-soluble microparticle with a net non-zero ionic charge in which the organic substance is ionically complexed with a layer of the polyelectrolyte. Also provided are water-soluble microparticles obtainable by the claimed process, and stable colloidal solutions thereof.
