In an arrangement in which the ends of metal bars 3 conveyed on chains 2 of an endless conveyer are engaged by a helically threaded member 9, the other ends of the bars are prevented from becoming tangled by the action of a magnetic unit 16. The latter comprises a series of eight coil units B1-B8 so designed that the field strength induced by the units increases progressively in the downstream direction of conveyer flow. The coil units are secured in two rows (B1, B3, ... and B2, B4, ... respectively) on a common bottom plate 20 by bolts 19 1 -19 8 , and pole plates 21, 22 (respective to the rows). The coil units in one row are arranged with opposite polarity from those in the other row. The poles of the units in the same row are isolated magnetically by the action of slots 23 in the pole plates between each of the units. The rods are counted by a device 10. In addition to the unit 16 a series of similar units 16 1 , 16 2 , ... are provided across the conveyer. These function to engage rods of shorter length. Also, if short rods do not extend far enough to engage the screw 9, they are held to the chains 2 by the units 16 1 , 16 2 , . . . until they pass downwards towards the lower run of the conveyer, and then drop off the chains.
