A pipe coupling for connecting together the ends of two pipes comprises a tubular casing 12, a tubular sealing sleeve 13 positioned inside the casing 12 and tensioning means 25 for tightening the casing 12 around the tubular sleeve 13. The casing 12 is manufactured from a strip of metal formed into a tube with a gap 14 extending longitudinally of the casing 12 between the free ends of the strip. The free ends of the strip are bent outwardly to form radially projecting flanges 15 extending longitudinally of the casing 12 on opposite sides of the gap 14. The two flange members 15 are placed between two reinforcing members 20 with the tensioning means passing through aligned holes 30,31,32,33 in the reinforcing members 20 and the outwardly projecting flanges 15. The reinforcing members 20 have an angled cross-section and extend the length of the coupling. The reinforcing members 20 are preferably U-shaped and have a web portion 20 through which the holes 30,31,32,33 for the tensioning means 25 pass and a flange 21 running along the longitudinal edge of the web portion 20 that is nearer to the axis of the coupling, with the flange 21 bearing against the tubular casing 12. Frusto-conical gripping rings 50 with teeth 52 maybe located within the tubular casing 12 at opposite ends thereof, with a backing ring 55 being provided inside the casing between each gripping ring 50 and the tubular sleeve 13, while an inner sleeve 45 maybe provided inside the tubular sleeve 13 to prevent the tubular sleeve 13 bulging inwardly between the pipe ends. Bridging member 18 may also be present inside the tubular casing 12 to bridge the longitudinal gap 14. Screw bolts 25 and nuts 34 are preferably used as the tensioning means. |
