The sheet alignment method uses 3 successive movement steps for alignment of the sheet front edge, for transverse movement o the sheet (13.1) in the direction of a side stop (9) and for subsequent alignment of the sheet front edge, respectively, before repetition of the sidewards movement of the sheet, e.g. via a suction plate (8). An Independent claim for a sidewards sheet alignment device is also included.
