A lubricating composition comprises an ester basestock consisting of a liquid neutral polyester that has been prepared by reacting together under esterification conditions and in one or more stages: (i) an aliphatic mono- and/or polyhydric alcohol having 5 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule and having no hydrogen atoms attached to any carbon atom in a 2 position with respect to any -OH group; and (ii) an aliphatic mono- and/or polycarboxylic acid having 3-12 carbon atoms per molecule; the basestock having dissolved therein: (a) 1À0 to 8À0% wt. of an alkylated aromatic amine antioxidant; (b) 0À005 to 1À5% wt. of a copper passivator; (c) 0À5 to 5À0% wt. of a neutral organic phosphate of the formula (RO) 3 PO, where the groups R are tolyl, phenyl or xylyl groups or alkyl or cycloalkyl groups having up to 10 carbon atoms; (d) 0À005 to 0À1% wt. of a dialkyl hydrogen phosphate of the formula (R1O) 2 P(O)OH, where R1 is an alkyl or cycloalkyl group having up to 10 carbon atoms; and (e) 0À005 to 0À2% wt. of a dialkyl phosphite of the formula (R2O) 2 P(O)H, where R2 is an alkyl or cycloalkyl group having up to 10 carbon atoms. The ester may be prepared by reacting one or more of the following: 2: 2: 4-trimethylpentanol, neopentyl alcohol, neopentyl glycol, trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolbutane, pentaerythritol and di-pentaerythritol with one or more of the following: caprylic acid, capric, caprioic acid, enanthic acid, pelargonic acid, valeric acid, pivalic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid and azelaic acid. The copper passivator may be imidazoles, pyrazoles, triazoles, salicylaldehyde semicarbazone or a C 1 -C 20 alkyl derivative thereof, and condensation products of salicylaldehyde and a hydrazine derivative or a fatty acid salt thereof such as a C 13 -C 18 fatty acid salt of 1-salicyl alaminoguanidine. The lubricant may also contain a dispersing agent, e.g. acrylate and methacrylate polymers, N-vinyl pyrrolidone/acrylate or methacrylate copolymers and N-vinyl pyrrolidone/olefin copolymers; a lead corrosion inhibitor, e.g. a C 1 -C 20 alkyl gallate, neopentyl glycol disebacate, sebacic acid and quinazarin; hydrolytic stabilizers, e.g. amines of formula R4(R5)NR6 where R4 and R5 are C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups and R6 is an alkaryl or hydroxy-substituted alkaryl group having up to 20 carbon atoms such as 2,6-ditertiarybutyl-4-dimethyl aminomethyl phenol; and silicones.
