Production, from pig iron of a wide range of low-C chrome steels, in an oxygen blown converter, involves periodic slag removal, and charging of FeCr containing 6-8%C, at a rate of up to 100 kg/tonne of metal per minute, in admixture with lime. At the cessation of blowing, a mixture of powdered FeSi with powdered SiCa is added to the slag until this becomes clear, and is then poured. Further blowing and addition of low-C FeCr, containing up to 0.15% C, mixed with Si alloys, is used to produce the final alloy. Production of a wide range of low-, medium-, and high-alloy steels containing Cr. Ability to use normal BF pigs as the basis, with consequent cheapening.
|
