[Also in Divisions B1-B2 and C3] A process for the manufacture of a suedelike sheet material comprises coagulating a layer of a polymer solution e.g. a polyurethane solution by treating the solution with a coagulating bath to form a polymer layer having a macroporous cellular structure within the layer and tearing the layer in two along a plane parallel to the layer and extending through the macroporous cellular structure. The layer may be formed by extrusion, by casting on a temporary support e.g. glass or by casting on a porous material e.g. a woven, non-woven or knitted fabric preferably of nylon and optionally impregnated with a plastics material, a further layer of said porous material being optionally applied to the free surface of the layer before or after coagulation. Layers formed by extrusion or by casting on a temporary support may be bonded to a porous material or to plywood before or after tearing. Coagulation is preferably effected by a solvent-non-solvent mixture, many suitable solvents and non-solvents being specified. The polyurethane may be admixed with a vinyl polymer or copolymer, a polyamide, a polyester, a polyesteramide, a polybutadiene or a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. |
