Fibre slivers 2 having long, staple, fibres of at least 100 mm. in length are manufactured into a non-woven mat 8 by conveying a plurality of slivers between a pair of rollers 3 and to a toothed roller 4 rotating at a higher peripheral speed than the rollers 3 which causes separation of the fibres which are then carried in an air stream, generated by rotation of the toothed roller, and deposited onto a conveyor screen mat 5 through which air is drawn by suction device 6. The toothed roller has radially extending straight teeth 11 mounted on longitudinally extending ribs 12 which act as blades and produce a strong current of air. The fibres may be formed from vinylon, nylon, polester, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride, Manila, sisal, jute or ramie. The mat 8 has been treated with a binder such as rubber latex, a synthetic resin emulsion, a natural or synthetic adhesive or with bitument such as asphalt.</p> |
