1,213,181. Dehydrogenation reactions. PETRO-TEX CHEMICAL CORP. 24 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967 (4)], No. 3776/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Organic compounds having at least 2 adjacent carbon atoms are dehydrogenated by (1) contacting the gaseous feedstock at elevated temperature with an oxidant comprising a ferrite of any of the metals Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd; (2) separating the dehydrogenated hydrocarbon from the oxidant which is diminished in oxygen; (3) reoxidizing the oxidant and (4) contacting one or more organic compounds to be dehydrogenated with the reoxidized oxidant. The oxidant may further comprise iron oxide. Halogen or compounds which liberate halogen during the reactions may be present. Steam and oxygen may be supplied to the reaction zone. Specific reactions mentioned are; propionitrile to acrylonitrile; propionaldehyde to acrolein; ethylchloride to vinyl chloride; methyl isobutyrate to methyl methacrylate; 2,3-dichlorobutane to chloroprene; ethyl pyridine to vinyl pyridine; ethyl acetate to vinyl acetate.
