PURPOSE: Provided is a 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl compound having improved tyrosinase inhibiting activity than a conventional whitening agent based on hydroquinone, for use in treating a skin disease, protecting a skin and producing cosmetics. CONSTITUTION: The 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl compound for a tyrosinase inhibitor is represented by the formula 1. The 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl compound is used as an active ingredient in a cosmetic composition for whitening a skin, inhibiting the melanin generation and preventing the skin aging. Further, the compound is used in a pharmaceutical composition for treating skin diseases caused by the excessive generation of melanin such as freckles, liver spots, skin spots, hyperpigmentation or senile lentigo.
