PURPOSE: A shadow mask for flat cathode ray tubes is provided to improve the color purity by enlarging the width of a slot from a center of the shadow mask to an X-axis of the shadow mask and reducing the width of the slot from the center of the shadow mask to an Y-axis of the shadow mask. CONSTITUTION: A shadow mask for flat cathode ray tubes includes an effective area portion(171) and an edge portion(172). A plurality of slots(174) are formed on a center portion of the effective area portion. The edge portion(172) is formed around the effective area portion(171). The width of the slot(174) is enlarged from a center of the shadow mask(108) to an X-axis of the shadow mask(108). The width of the slot(174) is reduced from the center of the shadow mask(108) to an Y-axis of the shadow mask(108).
