PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for preventing overload of a heat pump is provided to prevent damage of compressors by simultaneously stopping a plurality of the compressors if one of the compressors is under overload and simultaneously operating the compressors after the overload is removed and preventing overload from repeatedly occurring in the compressor having been under overload. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus includes a control part(70) controlling operation of a heat pump; a first compressor(51) and a second compressor(52) operated by electric current supplied by the control part; electric current returning parts(61,62) connected between the control part and the first compressor and the second compressor to allow electric current to be supplied to the first compressor and the second compressor, and allowing electric current supplied to the first compressor and the second compressor to the control part if the first compressor and the second compressor are under overload; and a comparison part(71) installed in the control part to sense difference between voltage of electric current generated in the control part and electric current returned by the electric current returning parts.
