PURPOSE: A DTE(Data Terminal Equipment) adaptively operating on a DCE(Data Circuit Termination Equipment) is provided to automatically sense a clock mode and clock speed of the DCE, and to enable a user to perceive the clock mode of the DCE according to sensed results, thereby automatically changing an operational environment of the DTE. CONSTITUTION: A clock signal receiving state detector(202) detects whether a clock signal is received from a DTE at predetermined period. If so, a clock speed detector(203) detects speed of the received clock signal. A central controller(204) controls the DTE to be operated according to the clock speed detected from the clock speed detector(203). If the clock signal is not received at the predetermined period, a local clock generator(207) generates a self clock signal used in the DTE and a DCE, and supplies the generated clock signal to the DCE and the central controller(204).
