<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery that can prevent abrupt temperature rise of the battery by detecting the over-charge state of the battery and increasing the internal resistance of the battery. <P>SOLUTION: This is an electrode for a battery that is made of a current collector, a first layer contacting the current collector, and a second layer contacting the first layer. The first layer has a carbonaceous material that is capable of storage and release of alkali metal ion having a specific surface area of 1.5 m<SP>2</SP>/g by BET method and the second layer has a material that is capable of storage and release of alkali metal ion.
