<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for remote maintenance capable of safely disclosing, to maintenance people, machine information accumulated in an individual industrial machine within a limit permitted by a user of the industrial machine. <P>SOLUTION: In the remote maintenance system, an industrial machine is connected to a service apparatus for servicing the industrial machine through Internet. A machine information representing the condition of the industrial machine is encrypted using a specified common key. The encrypted machine information is transmitted according to the requirement from a service apparatus. The fact that the industrial machine has transmitted the common key to the service apparatus is outputted. The transmitted encrypted machine information and the common key are received.
