PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera with enhanced AF processing performance with respect to an object at photographing by reducing an AF control processing time. SOLUTION: The processing routine for AF control processing of this invention comprises: steps 200, 204, 208, 212 of discriminating an operation state of C-AF processing just before a state of S1; steps 206, 218 of searching only a range in the vicinity of a current position of a focus lens to set a focal state in the case of fine adjustment when out of focus state is discriminated; steps 210, 218 of searching only the range in the vicinity of a focal position having already been detected to set the focal state when the focus lens is being driven to the focal position; steps 214, 218 of searching a range from the current position of the focus lens in the current driving direction to set the focal state in the case of a peak searching state; and steps 216, 218 of searching the entire range in other cases than the states above.
