PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit for processing automatic focus control at high speed while displaying an object image. SOLUTION: A CCD 21 of the image pickup unit has a first thinning out mode wherein longitudinal pixels of image data are thinned out to 1/8 at output of the image data and a second thinning out mode wherein longitudinal pixels of image data are thinned out to 1/16 at output of the image data. In the first thinning out mode, a first thinned out image can be outputted for a period of 1/30 seconds and in the second thinning out mode, a second thinned out image can be outputted for a period of 1/60 seconds. The number of longitudinal pixels of the second thinning out image is the number of longitudinal pixels of a liquid crystal monitor or below. In the case of automatic focus control, the second thinning out mode is selected and since a focus evaluation value FV is derived by 1/60 seconds each, the automatic focus is processed at high speed. On the other hand, the longitudinal pixels of the second thinning out image is interpolated to produce display image data ILV the number of longitudinal pixels of which is coincident with the number of longitudinal pixels of the liquid crystal monitor.
