PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a giant magnetoresistive effect (GMR) element which can easily be manufactured and is applicable to a narrower track, and to provide a manufacturing method thereof. SOLUTION: The GMR element 10 is provided with a first magnetic layer 11, Cu layer 13 formed on the layer 11, second magnetic layer 12 formed on a center portion 13a of the layer 13, ferromagnetic layers 14 formed on end portions 13b on both sides of the layer 13, and antiferromagnetic layer 15 formed on the layers 14. The layer 13 is so formed that both end portions 13b have a thickness for generating RKKY inverse parallel coupling between both side end portions 11b of the layer 11 and the layers 14, and is so formed that the portion 13a have a thickness for not generating RKKY exchange coupling interaction between a center portion 11a of the layer 11 and the layer 12.
