PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sealed EL element effectively preventing the penetration of moisture or oxygen while a rise in cost is suppressed to the utmost and preventing performance degradation with passage of time, and to provide a method for sealing an EL element.

SOLUTION: This sealed organic EL element is comprised of an EL element having an EL layer containing an organic luminescent layer on a glass substrate; a glass sealing plate having almost the same shape as the glass substrate and having a through hole or a groove on the inside surface; a moisture absorbent retained in the through hole or the groove; and an adhesive sticking the glass substrate with the sealing plate.
