PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable high-speed and smooth movement by eliminating fluctuation in an engaging state between a rack and a pinion for driving a recording head. SOLUTION: The head drive having a rack 6 disposed in a recording head 1 slid with respect to a recording disk and a pinion 11 engaged with the rack 6 and rotated by a driving motor 10 is provided with a recessed groove 8 disposed in the rack 6 and extended in parallel with rack teeth 6A, and the rotary shaft part 17 of the pinion 11 disposed in a swing arm 14 integrally having the guide 18 of a rigid body guided by the recessed groove 8 and swung. When the rack 6 is inclined in a moving direction, the swing arm 14 is swung along the inclination of the rack 6 to maintain constant a space between the rack 6 and the pinion 11. Since the swing arm 14 is a rigid body, it is not necessary to abut one of the rack and the pinion on the other by using a spring force, and no extra force is applied on a gear tooth surface between the rack and the pinion.
