PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect data recorded on this part since a medium is easily destroyed in a frequently appreciated area on a recording medium. SOLUTION: First, reproduction history indicating how many times an area is reproduced is counted for each reproduction, and history information is saved in an additional recording area. Then, at inserting the medium or immediately before discharging the medium, a place in which the number of times of reproducing is larger than a threshold value is determined. For the part larger than the threshold value, the backup of an image or audio data is recorded in the additional recording area such as a subcode area. When an error rate is larger than a predetermined threshold value during reproduction, reproduction is carried out by using the backed-up data. Alternatively, during medium insertion or immediately before medium insertion, a place in which the number of times of reproducing is much larger than the threshold value is determined and, for the place much larger than the threshold value, by using error- corrected reproducing data as a source, overwriting is carried out on the image or the audio data recorded on a main recording section.
