PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an evaluation method of magnetic tape, for evaluating the magnetic tape under the same conditions as at actual reproduction. SOLUTION: A plurality of MR heads 3 (3A, 3B, 3C, 3D), where the shielded surface distance between magnetoresistance effect elements are different each are arranged in a width direction W of the magnetic tape MT, in parallel, thus setting the contact state between the magnetic tape and the MR head to different conditions each. Then, at a frequency analysis section, a signal to be outputted, when reproducing the magnetic tape MT where no signals are recorded and a signal outputted at non-reproduction times are subjected to a frequency analysis; and both the analyzed results are compared, thus detecting thermal asperity noise, and evaluating the magnetic MT, based on the occurrence frequency of the thermal asperity noise in each MR head 3.
