PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester film for a magnetic recording medium from which a vapor deposition type magnetic tape for DVCAM use, which hardly causes drop-out and is superior in durability, is manufactured. SOLUTION: The polyester film for a magnetic recording medium is provided with a film, containing fine particles of particle size of 5 to 60 nm and an organic compound which is formed on one side A of the polyester film. In addition, the number of fine surface projections existing in the surface of the film concerned is 3×10<SP>6</SP>to 1×10<SP>8</SP>pieces/mm<SP>2</SP>, and the number of gathered sand-like foreign material depositions, having a width of at least 15μm adhering to the surface, is at most one per 2 m<SP>2</SP>.
