PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head that can reduce blurring in reading on both sides of the free layer and stabilize the reproduced output, and a thin-film magnetic head assembly using the thin-film magnetic head, and a method of manufacturing a thin-film magnetic head. SOLUTION: An MR element 7 includes a pinning layer 21, a pinned layer 23, a non-magnetic layer 25, and a free layer 27. Hard magnetic layers 9 sandwich the MR element 7 and apply a magnetic field to the free layer 27. The electrode layers 15 are disposed, separated from each other in a pair and supply a sense current to the free layer 27. A plurality of layers 13 are provided in between the electrode layers 15 and a part of the free layer 27 overlapping the electrode layers 15. The layers 13 include a non-magnetic layer 31, a ferromagnetic layer 33, and an antiferromagnetic layer 35. The magnetic orientation of the ferromagnetic layer 33 is fixed by the antiferromagnetic layer 35, and the ferromagnetic layer is made thicker than the free layer 27. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
