PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display apparatus for displaying a video signal with an aspect ratio different from that of a display screen that prevents burning of the display apparatus due to a difference of a level between a raster signal and the video signal. SOLUTION: The video display apparatus is configured such that a video signal luminance detection section 10 detects an average luminance level of the video signal, a raster signal level discrimination section 11 discriminates an output of a proper raster signal to the luminance of the video image, a raster signal control section 12 controls a raster signal output section 13 to output the raster signal, and a video signal composite section composes the video signal with the raster signal whose luminance level is adjusted and allows the display apparatus 15 to display the composed image.
