An assembly dispenses and cuts to length products (5) which are sold by length e.g. carpets, foil, cable and wire. The assembly has a power drive (6) to dispense the product and a cutter (9). The assembly esp. incorporates an electronic control unit (11) with a scanner (12), data entry unit (13), a length-measuring device (14) and a label printer (15). The electronic control unit is linked to the cutter and only allows cutter operation of the length of material withdrawn is adequate to complete the order within a given tolerance. Operation of the electronic control unit is initiated by insertion of a personal identification number.
